Barmer, It is said that taste never remains in any restriction. He makes himself accessible to every person who is his follower, or should we say he is convinced. Something similar happened with Namkeen of a village in Barmer district of Rajasthan. People who like this salty are more in foreign countries than in Barmer and Rajasthan.

Namkeen of Bishala village, located 23 kilometers away from Barmer district headquarters, has followers across seven seas. Here Narayandas Joshi left the job of police and started the work of making namkeen. It is called Khokha here. Its fame is not only in the country, but it has fans in foreign countries as well. Khokha is in great demand in Pakistan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and even America.

The story of the beginning of Khokha Namkeen is very interesting. Hemant Joshi of Bishala village says that his grandfather Narayan Das Joshi was in the police job 70 years ago, but due to some reasons he left the police job and started making namkeen while staying in the village. He brought water from the village pond and prepared spices by hand and made them salty and started selling them. The namkeen he made by adding carom seeds, asafoetida, salt and chillies, the villagers liked the taste of it very much.

The special thing about Namkeen made by Narayan Das Joshi is that its taste speaks volumes. Mangilal Bothra of the village then told him that Joshi ji, your salty will sting across the seven seas. Today the third generation of Joshi family is doing this work.

There is a lot of demand for Bishala’s kiosks even abroad. Local resident Dinesh Bothra says that in Bishala village, about 25 to 45 carts are selling salty today. Lakhs of people are crazy about Bhujia here. He told that even though a barricade wall has been erected between Hind and Sindh, the people of Sindh are crazy about Khokha Namkeen.
